No tinted masks!
Warning: Don’t Buy Tinted Masks for Freediving and Spearfishing!
From our February 2022 Safety Class:
Tinted dive masks might seem appealing, but they pose a serious safety risk. They prevent your dive buddy from seeing your eyes during ascent and surface recovery, which is critical for spotting signs of distress. These masks are unsafe and should be avoided.
While manufacturers claim that tinted masks help attract more fish by hiding your eyes, trust us—the fish know exactly why you’re there! 😂
Why Clear Masks Matter:
When recovering your partner from a dive—whether short or deep—we ask for an “OK” signal and stay with them for at least 30 seconds on the surface to ensure their safety before leaving.
Critical Blackout Zones:
-
10 feet before the surface
This is where the risk of shallow water blackout is highest. Stay alert! -
30 seconds after surfacing
Even after reaching the surface, blackout can occur. Stick by your buddy until they’re fully recovered. -
Stay close
In case your partner blacks out, you’ll be ready to assist immediately.

Note:
All information is provided for entertainment purposes. Use at your own risk. Also be aware that "Black out zones and recovery depts" change with deeper dives and the longer that your down you must double the wait time on the surface before diving again (AIDA3). If you black out or have blue lips you should not make any more dives (AIDA3, PFI, Barakuda rules).
Dive safe and have fun! 🤙
